BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) was founded 100 years ago, almost to the day (March 7, 1916) in Germany (BMW is as old as Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries now!).   Originally an aircraft manufacturer during World War I, BMW was forced to leave the airplane business by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty.   They immediately transitioned into motorcycle production and automobiles in 1928.
