Donating your car to charity is a wonderful way to give back to your community. If you have a car, truck, or SUV that you no longer want or need, donating it to a charitable organization like Ohio Valley Goodwill may be the right solution for you. Here are four important things to remember when donating your car:
Research the charity
While several charities accept car donations, not all vehicle donation programs are alike. Be sure to thoroughly research a charity before donating to ensure your goals and values match up with the organization. For example, do you know how the funds from your donation will be used? At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we’re proud to say that the revenue from our weekly Goodwill Auto Auction goes towards our mission of providing employment and job placement services to individuals right in the Cincinnati community! Not only will your car donation benefit an individual or family that needs a vehicle, but your good deed also helps Goodwill provide life-changing programs and services that benefit the larger community.
Make sure you have documents handy
Once you’ve selected a charity, it’s time to get your vehicle’s documentation together, including the vehicle title. If you’re missing the title, you’ll need to get a duplicate copy. In addition to working with the DMV to obtain your vehicle’s title, you should also contact the charity to inform them about your situation, as they may be able to help you get your title sooner and expedite the donation process.
Find a donation site or arrange a tow
Now that you’re ready to donate your vehicle to the charity of your choice, it’s time to find a donation site or arrange for your vehicle to be towed. At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we make it easier than ever to donate your car in Cincinnati. We have six convenient designated car donation drop sites located city-wide, thanks to our partnership with the Superior Automotive Group, Mike Albert Direct. If your vehicle isn’t in working condition, don’t worry! We can arrange for your vehicle to be towed FREE of charge. Simply out a donation form to provide more information about your vehicle and we will be in contact with you.
Get a receipt for your donation
Did you know that donating your car to charity may also make you eligible for a tax deduction? When you donate your vehicle to a charity like Ohio Valley Goodwill, you will receive a receipt for your donation, which you may be able to claim on your itemized taxes for a tax advantage. To learn more about how your donation applies to your specific tax situation, visit IRS.gov or call 1-800-829-1040 for more information.
